It occurs to me that the only time I long for more 'real' friendships, e.g. not online, is when someone tells me I ought to.

People try to convince me of that all the time. I've realized that I'm the happiest I've ever been being the crazy cat lady hermit. My online friendships provide all the socialization that I need from humans, outside of my husband, and he's as reclusive as me. Also, cats are drama free. :)
